Tomorrow, NWT Day will kick off Northern Weekend at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games - a culmination of the pan-territorial approach that has been taken by Canada’s Territories to promote the North at the Vancouver Games.
Premier Floyd Roland says the upcoming weekend will also be a high point for the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT)’s investment and participation as a contributing partner to the Vancouver 2010 Games.
“The Olympic Games have given us the opportunity to showcase our territory to a global audience - an unparalleled chance to demonstrate to the world the reasons why the NWT is a great place to live, invest in, and work,” the Premier noted. “Our government has capitalized fully on this opportunity.”
A variety of staged events, performances and promotions to promote NWT Day at Olympic venues throughout Vancouver and Whistler will conclude the day with a sold-out showcase performance during the evening’s Victory Celebration at BC Place Stadium. Titled The Drum – the Heartbeat of the North, the performance will spotlight the arts, culture, people and places that make the NWT a unique place.
Tomorrow night’s feature performance will complement and support the NWT presence that has been created through the GNWT’s investment and partnerships at the 2010 Winter Games.
In particular, Canada’s Northern House - a joint initiative of the Governments of the NWT, Nunavut, and Yukon - has been a focal point for visitors seeking to purchase northern products and learn more about the diverse cultures, economic potential and tourism opportunities in Canada’s North. Over 70,000 visitors have visited Northern House to date.
The GNWT is working to Maximize Opportunities by highlighting the NWT’s arts, culture and traditions to promote the NWT as a place to live and visit.
By strengthening awareness of the NWT’s northern identity and uniqueness, the GNWT is also working to promote a strong and independent North, as envisioned in the 16th Assembly’s Vision of Northerners Working Together.
