INDIAN AND NORTHERN AFFAIRS CANADA
Nov 16, 2009
OTTAWA, ONTARIO - Nov. 16, 2009 - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians, today issued the following statement on behalf of the Government of Canada
"November 16th is an important day for the Metis, who on this occasion celebrate the leadership and accomplishments of Louis Riel. I know special ceremonies are being held throughout Canada today that will honour the memory of Louis Riel.
Louis Riel is one of the first great political Metis leaders face - seen by many as a hero, defender of the Metis rights and father of Manitoba. His convictions have inspired deep pride among his people that has withstood the test of time. The traditions, culture, and the Michif ancestral language continue to live on in many Metis communities.
In July 2010, Metis will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Metis Nation, where Louis Riel and past Metis leaders will be honoured for their vision, strength and determination.
The Metis have shown a strong desire to partner with the Government of Canada and the provinces. Together, we have achieved important progress towards resolving outstanding Metis issues: we have recognized the contributions of Metis veterans; we have sought out new opportunities through economic development for Metis youth; and we have consulted on Metis rights. Together, we are working to make a difference and I am confident there is much more to come.
It is an honour for me to share with you in commemorating Louis Riel on this special day for the Metis.
