SIX NATIONS, ON. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: In conjunction with the Woodland Cultural Centre, Chiefswood is pleased to announce the opening of the first exhibit dedicated to the life, times and work of E. Pauline Johnson – Tekahionwake curated by Curator Emeritus, Thomas V. Hill.
The exhibit, “Faithfully Yours, E. Pauline Johnson,” features artifacts revealing the legend of Pauline beginning at her childhood home, Chiefswood, to her death in Vancouver, B.C. The exhibit opens at the Woodland Cultural Centre Museum on Saturday, August 15th 2009 at 3:00 p.m.
“Faithfully Yours, E. Pauline Johnson” is the first to depict Pauline from a Native perspective. Curator Emeritus, Thomas V. Hill presents Pauline as an artisan of words. “This exhibition is an experience in the passion of Pauline Johnson, her commitment to her identity and her understanding of her mixed heritage. She was one of the first Mohawk personalities that questioned social injustices,” says Hill.
Visitors will explore Pauline’s adventurous life as she performed in remote townships across Canada and sailed to England to meet the Royals. They will see how a woman of mixed heritage tackled the political and social issues of her time.
Pauline’s famous buckskin dress, a symbol of her heritage “comes home” from the Vancouver Museum along with other cherished objects she bequeathed to Vancouver. Many rare ‘never-before-seen’ artifacts of Pauline and her family will be a part of “Faithfully Yours, E. Pauline Johnson.”
Join us at the Woodland Cultural Centre, 184 Mohawk Street, Brantford, ON, for this rare and historical look into the life of E. Pauline Johnson. “Faithfully Yours, E. Pauline Johnson” opens Saturday, August 15, 2009 and runs to Thursday, December 24, 2009.
