Churchill MP Niki Ashton is calling on VIA Rail to provide alternate arrangements for remote Northern communities that are now impacted by the suspension of rail service. “People living along the Bay Line have no scheduled alternative travel without the train – and must have the ability to get in and out. It will also create problems for people served by the Keewatin Rail Line in Pukatawagan,” said Ashton. “ At this point, VIA must work with Northerners to ensure that alternative travel is available”.
Alternate arrangements could include air and water taxi. Air travel would work for communities such as Churchill and War Lake, and a combination of air and water taxi service could be provided for residents of Thicket Portage and Pikwitonei.
Ashton met with VIA Rail this week to discuss the concerns of Northern Manitoba regarding the rail service. “While efforts have been made to accommodate people throughout the maintenance work, the current labour dispute demands alternative arrangements from VIA so that Northerners aren’t left stranded”.
