Environment : Hydro-Québec confirms that Romaine project is situated entirely within territory of Québec

Montréal, February 11, 2009

Hydro-Québec confirms that the Romaine hydropower project will have no impact on the territory of Labrador since its area of influence is situated entirely within Québec. Moreover, the hydrological regime of the river above Romaine-4 will be identical to present conditions in all respects.


Hydro-Québec has filed a detailed environmental impact statement regarding this project. The EIS meets the requirements set forth in the directive issued by the ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement et des Parcs as well as in the directive of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, which was the subject of a broad public consultation. The EIS shows that the project will have no impact on the territory of Labrador, even based on the 1927 Privy Council border, which is not considered final by the Québec government.

During public hearings held last fall, Hydro-Québec provided the federal/provincial environmental review panel with all the required information on this issue, available here:
