AKWESASNE, Ontario - The Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) is pleased to announce the election of George ‘Tex’ Marshall, of Nova Scotia as Chairperson at its Annual General Assembly held September 13 – 14, 2008 in Kelowna, BC.

Brian MacDonald of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory was elected Treasurer. Keith Dick of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba continues as Vice-Chair, and Karen Collins of Cowichan Tribes, British Columbia as Secretary.

"This is a tremendous honour," said ASC Chair George ‘Tex’ Marshall. "I am privileged to serve as a leader of this great national organization."

"One of my responsibilities will be to encourage aboriginal people to participate, not just as athletes, but also as dignitaries, coaches, volunteers, and other opportunities at upcoming Canada Games events and 2010 Olympic Games," said Marshall.

George ‘Tex’ Marshall was team chairperson and assistant Chef de Mission of Team Mi'kmaw Nova Scotia at the 2008 North America Indigenous Games in Cowichan, BC. He has been involved with sport programs in Nova Scotia for more than 15 years, and is a sports animator with the Mi'kmaw Kina'matneway School Board, providing daily physical activity and healthy eating programs to Mi'kmaq schools in Nova Scotia.

Lyle Daniels of Saskatchewan, will continue to serve on the ASC’s Executive Committee as Past Chairperson.

The Aboriginal Sport Circle is Canada’s voice for Aboriginal sport and recreation, which brings together the interests of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples. The Aboriginal Sport Circle was created through a national consensus-building process, in response to the need for more accessible and equitable sport and recreation opportunities for Aboriginal peoples.
